The unique Market Cross
is just outside the flat.
This was built in 1747 by
Thomas Breaks. It has
been used as a lock up
and a town hall. Under the
veranda was a market for
local dairy produce. Two
bullet holes in the weathervane are said to have been made in 1804 by a gamekeeper and a soldier contesting their marksmanship.
You are only a couple of minutes walk from Barnard Castle, built in the 12th century and now a ruin, it has one of the finest examples of a round tower.
Also very close to your accommodation is the world famous Bowes Museum, with its many exhibitions, famous silver swan and its close connections with the royal family.
Just minutes walk away you can be beside the beautiful river Tees, where you can take a delightful easy stroll through Flatts Woods or go for a longer invigorating walk. Here you will often see the shy roe dear.
The flat overlooks the colourful market which is on every Wednesday. There is also a popular farmers market which sells local produce fresh from gardens and nearby farms and home baked breads and cakes.
This takes place the first Saturday of every month.
You can really get a feel for the local culture of “Barney” at these markets.
